Water Removal Chicago – Sump Pump Failure
Some homes have a sump pump in their basement because the water table is very high relative to their basement floor. Occasionally water seeps into the basement. The sump pump is supposed to remove any excess water in the basin to prevent water from entering the basement. One client failed to test his pump regularly, and of course, it stopped working while he was away on vacation. A neighbor checking on the house for his friend discovered a foot of water in the basement and promptly called the owner.
The owner called our SERVPRO office about water removal in his Chicago area home, and we quickly responded. The basement was partially finished, which meant that furnishings on the floor were wet. Many items were stored in the basement storage area were also wet. Items stored on shelves were unaffected.
The first step was to remove the excess water after first making sure that it was safe to enter the basement. We used powerful truck-mounted pumps to remove the water and then began the recovery and drying of the basement. Large fans and dehumidifiers were brought in to help dry the basement. The neighbor assisted in purchasing a new sump pump and arranging for it to be installed.
With the water removed and dehumidification underway, attention turned to the walls, the flooring and the contents of the basement. Hard surface items were hand washed and dried. Fabrics were wiped down, and air dryers used to dry the fabrics further. The contents of boxes on the floor were unpacked, dried, and repacked in new boxes. The drywall was damaged up to about two feet from the floor and needed to be removed. We removed excess moisture, and new insulation and drywall were installed.
The homeowner had been in touch with SERVPRO the entire time. He was kept fully informed about the damage and the steps being taken to remove the water. Although he arrived home to a mess, recovery, and restoration was well underway thanks to SERVPRO and the support of his neighbor next door.
