A Tourist Mecca with Over 58 Million Tourists in 2018
Chicago was incorporated in 1837. The city grew along Lake Michigan's shores and became attractive as a transportation hub between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi watershed. Chicago connected the American Midwest all the way to New Orleans via the Mississippi and the Great Lakes leading to the St Lawrence Seaway and the Atlantic Ocean.
Chicago's population is approximately 2.7 million people, while the greater metropolitan area provides a home to over 10 million people. Some fast facts about the city:

Tour the 606 Trail—very unique
Take an abandoned industrial railway train line, convert it into a 2.7-mile elevated trail system connecting parks, scenic views, an observatory, public art displays, and four of the cities hippest neighborhoods. This is the 606, which got its name from the common numbers of the west side zip codes. The communities connected by the trail are – Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, and Humbolt Park. The 606 is an ideal trail system to enjoy the day, exercise, commute from one area to another, or enjoy one of the many art displays.
There are also community events, such as bonfires, workouts, art displays, and even astronomy nights. Along the way, residents and visitors can also enjoy:
- Exelon Observatory – enjoy sunset views as well as regular astronomy nights
- Julia De Burgos Park – an excellent place for kids with a variety of play structures and a long sitting wall
- Damen Arts Plaza – enjoy rotating public art exhibits
- Park No. 567 and Walsh Park – enjoy special events and outdoor sports activities
The city supports a rich culture captured by the cities 18 museums. Whether you are interested in communications, surgery, the holocaust, science, history, art, or photography, there is something for everyone.
If you are interested in Chicago history, the Chicago History Museum is an excellent place to start. The museum was incorporated in 1857. However, the initial building was lost in the great Chicago fire of 1871. The museum occupied temporary buildings until 1896. Since 1896, the museum has grown by leaps and bounds to become a major exhibit for the cities history today. There are online exhibitions as well as onsite exhibitions for visitors to enjoy. Also, there are rotating temporary displays as well as permanent exhibits. Visitors to the museum can enjoy a varied experience each time they visit.

A popular permanent exhibit takes viewers through some of the significant events in the city’s history. The Great Chicago Fire, the Worlds Columbian Exposition, Maxwell St in the 50s, construction of the Sears Tower in the 70s, significant sports victories, and view President Obama's victory speech. The film runs 27 minutes and brings to life some of these significant events in the city's life.
Abraham Lincoln considered Chicago as his second home. The exhibit, Lincoln's Chicago, depicts lithograph views of the city during the 1860s, some of his contemporaries. This exhibit is also a permanent exhibit.
